With so many dogs in Des Moines, it is no surprise that there are a growing number of dog parks available to dogs of all ages and all sizes. Each dog park around Des Moines has its unique qualities and amenities and there are certain to be more dog parks added in the coming years.
Just recently, The Des Moines Register, reported that the city of Waukee is looking at adding a dog park to Centennial Park in new development in the coming years.
There are currently seven dog parks throughout the Des Moines metro. Hopefully you can find one near you (or your new home)!
The three dog parks in the city of Des Moines have an annual cost of $20 membership for each dog. Most dog parks around the Des Moines motro require these memberships which is for the safety of all dogs. To get a membership, owners must prove their dogs have had a rabies vaccination. One of the dog parks in the area is located in Ewing Park, Des Moines’ largest. It has shelters, playgrounds, an 18-hold disc golf course, trail, pond, and lots more!

- Riverwalk Park, 1111 Illinois St.
- Reno Memorial Dog Park, 3533 E. Douglas Ave.
Up and coming suburb Altoona has a free dog park where the dogs must only wear a collar and an ID tag. A proper license is also required. This dog park is a fenced area located just west of the Altoona Campus. It has turf, trees, benches, boulders, and a fire hydrant. There is also a water fountain for dogs and their owners! The park is a full acre and welcomes dogs of all sizes.

If you live in or around Ankeny, the Ankeny Dog Park is 7.5 acres of wide open space for dogs of all sizes to run freely. On the grounds is a half-acre pond and designated spaces for large and small dogs. Passes are available at City Hall and Ankeny-area Hy-Vee stores.

West Des Moines
One of the most popular dog parks in the Des Moines metro is the Raccoon River Park Dog Park. The dog park, also has softball fields, a lake, and shelters for events. The dog park boasts 10 acres of park for small and large dogs. Groups of pet owners also have meet-ups to celebrate their pets at Raccoon River Dog Park. The park is open year-round from 6:30 a.m. until dusk.

Driving along I-235 towards downtown, you drive by the Windsor Heights Dog Park. This park is free and open to all residents or those just traveling through Des Moines. For the best access, a person should park at Colby Park, (6900 School Street) and walk on the trail south. All dogs must have current vaccinations.

Dogs of all ages and sizes love to play with other dogs; plus it is a great chance to get outside for owners as well! The great things is, no matter where you live, you are bound to live close to an open dog park.
