How to Pick a Des Moines Neighborhood

how to pick a neighborhood to buy a house

Whether you’re looking for a large yard in the suburbs of Des Moines, or the feel of old Des Moines, there is a home out there for you. With some of the best suburbs in the nation -- look no further than West Des Moines, Johnston, Waukee, Urbandale, and Clive -- not to mention Ankeny, Des Moines has a neighborhood for everyone.

If you’re unsure of which neighborhood would be the best fit for you, here are a few things to consider.

Schools

Des Moines has some of the best school districts in the state and nation. Valley High School in West Des Moines was listed as the eighth best high school in Iowa in 2015 by U.S. News and World Report. Waukee Senior High School was ranked tenth!

If you want more detailed information, there is a multitude of data available on the Iowa Department of Education’s website.

Nature

No matter which area of Des Moines you choose to live, you will have access to some of the best nature and park areas in any large city. It seems no matter where you look, a park is nearby. (Even a dog park!)

Not only are parks around for families, fun, and friends, but Des Moines boasts a great trail network. Whether you pick Johnston as your new community with their Trestle to Trestle Trail or West Des Moines with their Jordan Creek Trail, Des Moines has miles of trails for walkers, runners, and bikers of all ages.

One last point about nature, if you’re into golf or tennis, there are courses and courts scattered throughout the Des Moines metro.

Culture

Nestled a few hours from major cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, Omaha, and Kansas City, Des Moines offers incredible access to culture of all kinds. Sometimes this comes in the form of town festivals and farmer’s markets and sometimes in overall access to recreational activities.

Value Penguin, a website focused on personal finance issues ranked Des Moines as the 4th best city for young families. That ranking was determined by the cost of living, access to outdoor activities, and education. It is no surprise that a metro like Des Moines ranks high with the quality education, nature trails, and overall quality of life offered in many different neighborhoods.

Finally, Money ranked Johnston and Waukee in the Top 50 Best Places to live in 2015 and FamilyCircle.com ranked Waukee in the top ten for best towns for families in 2015 .
